Hi I’m Colin owner and chief instructor of Airstylers Kite School in Pak Nam Pran, Thailand.
I write this blog to try to tell you what’s actually happening on the ground (well on the sea) here. Weather forecasts are not very accurate in Thailand so i try to tell you how the wind is, how the sea is, and whether it’s good for learning or good for experienced riders.
Thailand is known as being a light wind spot. Is it? Well yes and no – the wind is warm so you’ll need a bigger kite than in cold countries. But from November to January we get regular 15/16 knot days and a lot of them get up to 20+.
That’s not light wind!
From the end of January until mid- June, as the land gets hotter and hotter – we get a very predictable thermal sea breeze. In february it’s up to 15kts by the middle of the afternoon and April and May we regularly see 20kt.
That’s not light wind!
So is Thailand a light wind destination? No! But it’s pretty undiscovered still – so instead of 300 kitesurfers crowding onto Tarifa beach we have 3 on the same size beach. Which do you prefer?
There are very few spots around the world that have wind all year round. 5/6 months of wind is a good season in hot countries. Here in Pak Nam Pran we get 7/8 months. That’s better than most well known kite spots in Asia.
So what are you doing now?
Planning your trip?
Cool!!
See you soon…
